Interferential Therapy at Spire Hospital
Interferential Therapy (IFT) is a specialized form of electrical stimulation therapy utilized to alleviate pain and stimulate muscle function. At Spire Hospital, Dr. Gaurav Pawar employs IFT to enhance patient recovery from various musculoskeletal conditions, leveraging the therapy’s unique ability to penetrate deeper tissues for effective pain relief and healing.
Do’s and Don’ts Interferential Therapy
Do's
- Consult a Healthcare Professional: Always discuss with Dr. Gaurav Pawar or another qualified healthcare provider to ensure IFT is suitable for your specific condition.
- Follow the Treatment Plan: Adhere to the prescribed number of sessions for optimal results, as IFT typically requires multiple treatments.
- Communicate Discomfort: Inform your therapist about any discomfort or unusual sensations during treatment so adjustments can be made.
- Relax During Treatment: The therapy is generally painless; remaining calm helps the electrical impulses work effectively.
Don’ts:
- Avoid Sensitive Areas: Do not use IFT near the eyes, throat, chest, or on areas with impaired sensation or open wounds.
- Limit Frequency of Use: Stick to the recommended treatment schedule; overuse may lead to adverse effects.
- Avoid Metal Implants: Do not apply IFT over metal implants as it may interfere with electrical impulses and cause discomfort.
- Pregnancy Precautions: Pregnant individuals should avoid IFT, particularly around the abdomen and pelvic region.
Recovery Timeline
- First Few Days: Expect swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medications, ice, and elevation. You will likely be using crutches and a brace.
- Weeks 1-3: Focus on restoring range of motion with physical therapy. Gradually increase activity levels but avoid weight-bearing exercises.
- Weeks 4-6: Begin to regain strength through more intensive exercises. Weight-bearing activities may be introduced slowly.
- Months 3-6: Continue physical therapy with an emphasis on strengthening the leg muscles. Low-impact exercises like cycling or swimming may be permitted.
- Month 6 Onwards: Depending on your progress, you may gradually return to sports or other physical activities. However, full recovery and return to high-impact sports may take 9 to 12 months.
